Mike Babcock just got his first championship rock since he started coaching in the NHL for the Ducks back in the 2002-2003 season, that first year with Anaheim, he took them to the NHL Finals against the Devils, who beat them in 7 games.
Now that he has won a title and accumulated more experience, the Red Wings knew that they wanted Babcock in Detroit for a few more years, and so they offered the 45 year-old coach a 3 year contract worth $4,5 million dollars that runs until 2011.
Babcock’s contract was the only one that expired this year, and the Red Wings are a veteran team, so they didn’t wanted to bring a rookie coach to Detroit, plus Babcock is probably the current best coach in the league, and his numbers back this affirmation: he’s the first coach in the NHL to win 50 games in 3 straight seasons and a total of 231 overall in 5 years, plus he has 43 victories in playoffs, which is 15 wins more than any other coach in NHL history, not bad at all.
The Red Wings won the 2008 NHL Finals and took the Stanley Cup home as they defeat the Penguins by 4-2 with their player Henrik Zetterberg getting awarded the Conn Smythe Throphy as he got named MVP of the playoffs.
Overall the Red Wings and Mike Babcock are a single entity, and if the lattest can do a good job in next 3 seasons to come, he might as well sign again with Detroit for other 3. “We barely got this one done and Mike is already negotiating the next one,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said of Babcock’s contract.
