Ocho ready to win US Open

Mexico, better known for its piramids and tequila, but now for Lorena Ochoa, the number one player in women’s golf right now.

And with the US Open coming ahead, Ochoa is ready to go for the championship she’s missing on her resume. Critics compare Lorena Ochoa with Tiger Woods, as both have struggled to win the Open due to the difference on scores and how the winner is determined, for Ochoa this time is not about making birdies (her specialty), it’s more about saving pars.

And  the mexican golfer is prepared to face her opponents more now than ever, as she is looking to come in the same way as Annika Sorenstam who won 3 US Open titles on the course of her career.

Critics have being asked if its true or fiction that Ochoa will be able to match Sorenstam, and the answer from all of them was: fiction. The 26 year old Ochoa might win the US open this time, since she’s coming of winning two of the last 3 golf majors and riding hight, but to ask her to win 2 Opens in a row it’s a little to much.

The Draft is tomorrow

Michael Beasley… Where is he going to be drafted?

Tomorrow is the big day for the new prospects that will be playing next season at the NBA since the 2008 draft will be held at New York and there is a little of uncertainty surrounding the top 2 picks.

Michael Beasley is to be chosen as number one, and the Bulls who has the first choice are likely to pick him, but Beasley has done some workouts with Chicago and the Miami Heat who has the second overall pick of the draft.

So if the Bulls opt for their native fellow second pick Derrick Rose, the Heat will set their eyes on the former Kansas State player, though, I think Miami will consider a lower pick in the draft in order to have the chance of ridding off the contracts of Marcus Banks and Mark Blount.

People compares Beasley with Derrick Coleman, the overall number one pick of the 1990 draft, and the Nets expected him to become the best power forward ever, but things didn’t worked out that way and Coleman looked like he never gave as much as he projected, just as Beasley.

But it’s just too early to come with conclusions about the most promising figure of this year’s draft, when the time comes, we will see if the Beasley/Coleman comparison has some credit or if it’s just pure jive talking.

Carmelo Anthony arrested for DUI

It’s almost as if some athletes are doomed with the police shadow on their backs, and here’s another professional player that has being on the black list for a while: Carmelo Anthony.

The 24 year-old player from the Nuggets got arrested and went to court due to a DUI (driving under influence) charge and will have to spend one year in probation and serve some community service hours. His lawyer Dan Recht said that the NBA All-Star would have gotten a better deal if he wasn’t a public figure, as there is a tendency from the US legal system to be tough with celebrities.

This is just one of a series of incidents involving Carmelo Anthony, so let’s name a few others: back in 2004 he appeared in a stree video called “stop snitching” warning people from going to the police with incriminatory information, the same year he got caught with marijuana hidden inside his backpack, and just last season, Anthony threw a few punches in a brawl at the Madison Square Garden.

Carmelo Anthony got chosen to play with the USA national Basketball Team at the coming Beijing Olympics, hopefully he will be making more headlines soon but positive ones that is.

Federer and Venus favorites to the title at Wimbledon

Just like Rafael Nadal has the command on one tourney: the French Open as he has won four straight Roland Garros titles, Roger Federer is the leader at Wimbledon with 5 straight titles, and yesterday he proved why he’s the favorite to come up with a sixth championship as he easily beat Dominik Hrbaty by 6-3 6-2 6-2.

Yesterday’s win meant the 60th on-a-row victory playing on grass for Roger Federer which confirms why he’s the world’s number one.

This was some sort of rivalry-adjustment for Federer against Hrbaty as the slovakian beat the spaniard on their previous two matches, and both are close friends and practice together regularly, they have also played doubles together, which made the match even more interesting as the two tennists were trying to prove who were the best, this time it was Federer’s time to win.

On the women’s side, Venus Williams is a strong title contender as she has won 4 Wimbledon titles already, but Maria Sharapova, whom Williams defeated at last year’s finals might be looking to take revenge.

We will have to wait and see if the forecasts will stand and Federer and Williams comes as this year’s tourney winners.

Sonics future will be decided this week

It’s almost a fact that the Sonics are leaving Seattle for Oklahoma City, the questions is when…

Yesterday marked the fourth day of a sixth day trial to determine if the Sonics can leave now by breaking a lease they have which ends in two years, or if they have to honor the lease and remain for two more seasons at Seattle. The first day of the trial, around 3,000 Sonics fans gather together in front of the courthouse where the luck of their team is being decided. “We may lose the Sonics but we’re going to make a helluva lot of noise doing it.” A fan said.

The battle is between Sonics owner Clay Bennett and the city of Seattle, and if the Sonics are ruled in favor of leaving now, they will be forced to pay a sum that is not yet determined but that it will be substantial, since having a professional NBA team in the city means civic pride, and that is something that cannot be calculated in numbers.

Another key factor is that the Sonics support 1,300 people, and contributes with around $188 millions in local economic activity, which  just worsen the situation.

Will the Sonics fans keep on cheering for their team even if they don’t belong to Seattle anymore? I bet most of them will…

Taylor might become a Packer

Jason Taylor is not sure where he’s going to play at this coming NFL Season. He has spend all of his career with the Dolphins and now the Packers have their eyes set on Miami’s all-star deffensive end, and chances are that his new home will be Green Bay.

On his side, Taylor wants to play one more season with the Dolphins, but the Packers are willing to acquire his services only if he backs down from his desire of staying in the only team he has ever played for at the NFL.

Bob Sanders, the current Packers deffensive coordinator and deffensive tackles coach Robert Nunn, both are familiar with Taylor since they worked for 3 seasons with the Dolphins, “Anytime you can get a guy of that caliber, you’d want to try to get him”, said Dunn of Taylor.

Taylor will be a great addition to the Packers since their starting deffensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila is coming from knee surgery, and even though Biamila told the press that he will be ready for the starting of the season, the Packers are not willing to take a chance and are pushing for a trade in order to bring the 2006 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year to Green Bay.

At first the Dolphins wanted a first-round pick in exchange for Jason Taylor, but after many talks, they are willing to take a second-round pick for the 2007 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award winner.

Celtics 2008 NBA champions!

What a game! That’s all I can say about game 6 of the series between Celtics and Lakers for the 2008 NBA Finals which Boston won by 131 to 92 and buried the Lakers at the TD Banknorth Garden and acquired their first championship in 22 years.

Thanks to an outstanding display of team effort, the Celtics showed the Lakers why they were the best team in the NBA all season long.

Remember, it’s not the “big 3” anymore, is the “big 15” as everybody played their best basketball to seal an excellent year with championship rings.

It’s true, Paul Pierce was the MVP of the 2008 NBA Finals, but yesterday’s star was Rajon Rondo, he finished the game with 21 points and 6 incredible steals that just contributed to the humiliation suffered by LA yesterday at the Garden.

Now, after spending 13 years in the NBA and have received all possible honors an NBA player could get, Kevin Garnett crowned an incredible career with what he was missing: an NBA championship title, same things goes for Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. All 3 were asked after the game what they told each other the first time they got together at the Celtics locker room when Garnett and Allen were signed to complement Pierce, and the 3 all stars said the same things separately: “forget about the egos, let’s play along and win a championship” and so they did.

Congratulations to the 2008 NBA champions: the Boston Celtics.

Rosevelt Colvin officially with Texans

Rosevelt Colvin is a great linebacker, but the Patriots are looking for new blood and Colvin is a veteran, he was relesed by the Pats on February when he became a free agent, and the Texans acquired him on June 16, 2008.

Since the Texans have deffensive end Mario Williams, the top overall pick of 2006, they need a player with a few tricks under his arm in order to complement William’s game, and that guy is Colvin.

The details of the deal were not disclosed but it’s being said that the 30 year old Colvin will stay with the Texans for a few years.

Rosevelt Colvin was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round of the 1999 NFL Draft and spend a few years with them, then he joined the Patriots in 2003 and got two Super Bowl rings.

He missed the last five games of last season and the playoffs due to a foot injury. Colvin says that he’s healthy and ready to help the Texans to come up with a good season, as his new team have being disastrous on their 5 seasons at the NFL. Hopefully “rosey” will do a good job.

Lakers barely made it to game 6

Paul Pierce had the chance to put thing even yesterday at the fourth quarter playing in LA, but a steal from Kobe Bryant prevented the Celtics from obtaining their 17th NBA championship in history.

Things were 97-95 when Boston had the possesion, Pierce was advancing to shooting area when Bryant saw the ball a little exposed and tapped it from Pierce’s hands, inmediately Lamar Odom took the ball and threw it to Kobe Bryant who ran to the Celtics ring and slam dunked to sink the posibilities of the Celtics to celebrate.

Now the series is going back to Boston and chances are that the Celtics are going to win the title, why? Well it’s simple, the Lakers were a regular team playing at home, and they know that the Celts are probably the most dominant team playing at the TD Banknorth Garden, and so they are forced to find ways of playing better and level the series at 3 even, but most likely it’s not going to happen.

Actually the Lakers are the first team in NBA history to find a way out of a 3-1 deficit in NBA Finals, which is quite an achievement, but the Celtics also had a glorious moment on game four, when they fought back a 24-point deficit and won that game 97-91 for the biggest comeback in NBA history.

So this truly has being the kind of finals everybody was expecting, pure good old basketball between the biggest rivals this league has ever had, and now it seems like they both are back and for good.

Marcus Vick got arrested

Vick, not Michael but Marcus, the youngest brother of the former falcons quarterback is the one on the news right now, and as his relative, not exactly for good reasons.

Marcus Vick, who played for Virginia Tech and then with the Miami Dolphins at the NFL got arrested for DUI (driving under the influence) and for scaping from the police.

Before Michael Vick’s dog fighting scandal who has him serving a 23 month jail sentence, Marcus was known as being more troubled than his brother, he has a history of violent behaviour that got him off  Virginia Tech and that hasn’t allowed him to sign to a professional football franchise.

Marcus Vick was seeing arguing with Miami resident Delicia Lenora Cordon by a bicycle officer and inmediately Vick took off and got detained later by another officer. Cordon also got arrested under the charge of being drunk in public.

After getting arrested Vick and Cordon spent a few hours at Norfolk City Jail but were bonded out soon after that.

The talent of these brothers will remain shadowed by their personal life’s incidents and it’s truly not a good moment for the Vick family.
